HOLLOW
Book Description
Hollow is a high-concept story that explores the idea that the north pole may be more than it appears. It’s 1964 and U.S. ships in the Gulf of Tonkin have just been torpedoed. President Lyndon Johnson retaliates by bombing North Vietnam, setting off protests across the nation’s campuses. Ellen Sturgeon, a Boston Globe reporter, is assigned to cover the sit-ins, and stumbles onto the story of a man, Erik Nansen, who had spent fifty years in jail for killing his father. To her this is more interesting because, after Nansen is released, he’s found dead in his motel room of an apparent suicide. Ellen is intrigued by the fact that, at his arrest, Nansen insisted that he and his father spent two years in the center of the earth with an advanced civilization.
Nansen claimed that, on their return, his father died when a glacier split. Ellen begins investigating the amazing story, but her efforts only lead her and her colleague, Ted Raymond, and Dr. Harriet Ungar, to more questions, and grave danger. Nansen had given Ungar maps to reach the interior of the earth, and he and Harriet had planned to go there. Nansen knew that governments were after information regarding the secret civilization, and especially the maps that would lead them there. Ellen, Ted, and Harriet become a target of the government, which will do anything to get the maps. Following the deaths of their loved ones, there is only one place to hide, the interior of the earth—but first they must find it, if it truly exists.

OBSIDIAN
Book Description
My book “Obsidian” is loosely based on a true story of a young Indian woman and the racism she and others encountered during the time of the Gold Rush when tribes were annihilated and their villages burnt to the ground. Children were stolen and taken to mission schools to “remove the Indian in them.” I first had learned of this by my adopted father who had been sent to one of these schools. The story takes place in the Sierra Nevada Mountains where I have spent many rockhounding trips and vacations.
The book, “Obsidian” follows a teenage Native girl, Alini, who is raped and her parents killed by soldiers in a raid on a Miwok village. The soldiers sell her to a Mission School from which she escapes. Having been taken far from her home, she seeks help from people she encounters in the mountains facing danger at every turn trying to avoid being found by the soldiers.
